As inflation continues to rise, people are looking for more ways to try and make ends meet.One pawn shop is seeing an increase in new customers as people look to sell their belongings to make a little extra cash.Denny Russell has owned National Pawn in Kansas City, Missouri, for 22 years. He said he has a consistent customer base of about 3,500, but recently has seen more people coming into his shop who he has never seen before. “You can tell a little bit of difference in people struggling, you know, people borrowing a little bit more money and putting more stuff in pawn,” Russell said. “We try to help the best we can, but you can only do so much.”He says a lot of people are trying to pawn things that don’t necessarily have resale value – like old clothes and used tennis shoes. He said a lot of people tell him they need money to pay for gas or to make their rent payments. “You want to help them the most you can, but you don’t want to kill yourself at the other end,” Russell said. “They have tears in their eyes, you know, and it kills you. But, you know, there’s nothing you can do.”Jerry Roads said he hasn’t had to pawn an item in years but sold a bracelet today to make rent.“I need the rest of my rent money,” Roads said “This is the one I always come to. They always take care of me.”Roads said his rent recently increased which is why he went to National Pawn.Russell said most sales are down, but a gun and ammunition sales are up.
